Ahrefs alternatives: the right tool for each SEO job
Ahrefs is excellent but priced for heavy users. Ahrefs alternatives by use case: backlinks, keywords, rank tracking, budget all-in-ones and AI assistants.
Ahrefs is one of the best SEO tools ever built. Its crawler, link index and Site Explorer set the standard that most other tools are measured against. It is also priced for people who use it every day: Lite starts at $129 a month, and the plans that most agencies end up on cost two or three times that.
If you open Ahrefs a few times a month, or you only use one or two of its tools, that price is hard to justify. The good news is that you rarely need to replace all of Ahrefs. You need to replace the part you actually use.
This guide is organized by job: backlinks, keyword research, rank tracking, an all-in-one tool on a budget, and working through an AI assistant. For each, we say honestly where Ahrefs is still better. Prices were checked on the vendors' own pricing pages in October 2026.
What Ahrefs costs and what you get
From the Ahrefs pricing page (as of October 2026):
| Plan | Price | Tracked keywords | History | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $29/month | Not listed | Not listed | Basic keyword and competitor lookups |
| Lite | $129/month | 750 | 6 months | 5 non-verified projects, 1 user |
| Standard | $249/month | 2,000 | 2 years | 20 non-verified projects |
| Advanced | $449/month | 5,000 | 5 years | 50 non-verified projects |
| Enterprise | $1,499/month | Custom | Unlimited | Annual commitment |
Annual billing saves up to 17%. Extra users cost extra on every plan, and add-ons such as Brand Radar AI and Report Builder are priced separately (a Content Kit add-on is listed as coming soon). All paid plans from Lite up include API and MCP access, and Ahrefs Free gives you Ahrefs data on your own site at no cost.
Where Ahrefs is genuinely better
Before looking at alternatives, it is worth being clear about what you give up.
- The link index. Ahrefs runs its own crawler and one of the largest, freshest backlink indexes available. If you do link building, digital PR or link audits for a living, its data is hard to beat.
- Historical data. Standard and Advanced keep 2 and 5 years of history. That matters for diagnosing traffic drops and for showing long-term trends to clients.
- Depth of reports. Content Explorer, Site Explorer's top pages and organic competitor reports are mature and fast.
- AI visibility at scale. Brand Radar tracks brand mentions across AI platforms, as a paid add-on.
If those are central to your work, Ahrefs is probably worth it. The alternatives below are for everyone else.
Ahrefs alternatives at a glance
| Job | Alternative | Starting price (Oct 2026) | Compared with Ahrefs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backlinks | Majestic | Lite from about €47/month | Link-only tool, strong historic index |
| Backlinks | Moz Pro | Standard $99/month | Link Explorer and Domain Authority, smaller keyword quotas |
| Keyword research | Mangools | Basic from about $49/month | Simpler, cheaper, lighter on links |
| Rank tracking | SE Ranking | Core from about $129/month | 2,000 keywords tracked daily on the entry plan |
| All-in-one suite | Semrush | SEO Toolkit Pro from about $139.95/month | Broader marketing suite, similar price tier |
| Budget all-in-one and AI assistant | SEO Sauna | €59/month excl. VAT, incl. €17 of usage credits | Essentials, flat price, smaller link data |
Backlinks: Majestic or Moz Pro
Majestic does one thing: links. Its Trust Flow and Citation Flow metrics are still used by many link builders, and its historic index goes back a long way. The Lite plan starts from about €47/month on monthly billing (the price shown to European visitors on Majestic's pricing page), with Pro and API plans above it. You do not get keyword research or rank tracking.
Moz Pro combines Link Explorer, which Moz says covers over 40 trillion links, with keyword research and rank tracking. Standard is $99/month, but it includes only 150 keyword queries a month, so it works best when links are your main job. We cover Moz's limits in Moz alternatives.
Where Ahrefs is better: freshness and coverage of its own index, and how quickly you can move from a link report to the competitor's top pages. For heavy link work, Ahrefs Lite or Standard is often still the right answer.
Keyword research: Mangools
Mangools' KWFinder is one of the easiest keyword tools to learn. You get search volume, keyword difficulty, SERP previews and local data without a learning curve. Basic starts from about $49/month on monthly billing, with an Entry plan and a free plan below it. Mangools also offers an MCP server now.
Where Ahrefs is better: Keywords Explorer has a much larger database, better parent topic grouping and far more filtering. If you research thousands of keywords a week, Mangools will feel small. For a blogger or small business planning a few pages a month, it is plenty.
Rank tracking: SE Ranking
If what you really use Ahrefs for is Rank Tracker, you are paying a premium for a feature others do just as well. SE Ranking's Core plan starts from about $129/month (as of October 2026) and tracks 2,000 keywords daily across 10 projects, compared with 750 tracked keywords on Ahrefs Lite. It adds white-label reports through an Agency Pack, and AI Overviews and ChatGPT tracking through a separate AI Search add-on.
Where Ahrefs is better: rank tracking sits next to the rest of Ahrefs' data, so jumping from a lost ranking to the competitor that took it is quicker. For a dedicated tracker, see our best rank trackers comparison.
All-in-one: Semrush
Semrush is not cheaper than Ahrefs, but it is the obvious all-in-one comparison. SEO Toolkit Pro starts from about $139.95/month (as of October 2026), and it covers PPC research, content tools and local SEO that Ahrefs does less of. It is the better fit if your team runs both SEO and paid search. The detailed comparison is in Semrush vs Ahrefs.
Budget all-in-one and AI-assistant workflow: SEO Sauna
SEO Sauna is our product, so weigh this section accordingly. It covers the essentials in one place: keyword research, domain and competitor research, backlinks, rank tracking, site audits, Google Search Console and AI visibility.

What it does differently:
- Flat price, usage credits. €59/month excluding VAT includes 17,000 usage credits (€17) each month. Top-ups cost €1 per 1,000 credits. No per-seat pricing, no per-project cap, no premium tier to unlock features.
- Rank tracking sized to your budget. You set keywords, devices, depth and frequency, and SEO Sauna shows the cost before the tracker runs. Roughly: 100 keywords on one device, five pages deep, weekly, costs about €1–2 a month.
- Built for AI assistants. The MCP server lets Claude, ChatGPT (custom connection), Cursor, Codex and other MCP clients call SEO Sauna's tools. Ahrefs also offers MCP on its paid plans, so the difference is less about access and more about price and scope: with SEO Sauna, the same €59 plan covers your Search Console data, AI visibility and agent skills for jobs like link prospecting and competitor analysis.
- Your own Google data, free. Search Console reads use no credits.
- AI visibility included. Prompt tracking on ChatGPT and Gemini by default, plus Google AI Overviews, Claude and Perplexity.
- Open source. MIT-licensed and self-hostable.

Where Ahrefs is better: SEO Sauna's SEO data comes mainly from DataForSEO, not from its own crawler. Ahrefs' link index is bigger and more established, its history goes back further and it has more specialist reports. If backlinks are the core of your work, keep Ahrefs for that and use something lighter for the rest.

A common setup is exactly that: Ahrefs Lite for the months you do link work, and SEO Sauna for day-to-day research, tracking and AI-assisted analysis. You can try SEO Sauna with 1,000 free trial credits (€1) and no card.
A simple way to decide
- List what you used Ahrefs for last month. Be honest. Many people find it was two reports.
- Match each to a job above. If it is mostly links, stay on Ahrefs or try Majestic. If it is keywords and tracking, a cheaper tool will do.
- Check limits, not just price. Tracked keywords, projects, seats and history decide the real cost.
- Consider how you work. If you already plan SEO in Claude or ChatGPT, a tool with an MCP server saves copy-pasting. See Claude SEO for examples.
FAQ
What is the best Ahrefs alternative?
There is no single one. For backlinks, Majestic or Moz Pro. For keyword research, Mangools. For rank tracking, SE Ranking. For a full suite, Semrush. For the essentials at a flat price with an AI-assistant workflow, SEO Sauna.
Is there a free Ahrefs alternative?
Ahrefs Free itself gives data on your own site, and Google Search Console shows your real clicks, impressions and positions at no cost. For competitor research you need a paid tool. SEO Sauna lets you start with 1,000 free trial credits and no card.
Is Ahrefs' backlink data better than other tools?
For most uses, yes. Ahrefs runs its own crawler and maintains one of the largest backlink indexes, and it updates quickly. Majestic and Moz have large indexes of their own. Tools built on third-party data, including SEO Sauna, are fine for overviews and competitor comparisons but are not the first choice for deep link audits.
How much does Ahrefs cost in 2026?
As of October 2026, Starter is $29/month, Lite $129/month, Standard $249/month, Advanced $449/month and Enterprise $1,499/month, with up to 17% off on annual billing. Extra users and add-ons cost more. Check the Ahrefs pricing page for current figures.
Can I use SEO data inside ChatGPT or Claude?
Yes, through MCP. Ahrefs offers MCP access on its paid plans, and SEO Sauna's server at https://app.seosauna.com/mcp works with Claude, ChatGPT (custom connection), Cursor and Codex. See Connect your AI assistant for setup.
