Moz alternatives: 6 tools worth comparing in 2026
Why people look past Moz Pro in 2026, and six alternatives compared on price, limits and strengths, including where Moz is still the better choice.
Moz Pro was the first SEO tool many marketers ever used. Domain Authority became an industry shorthand, the Beginner's Guide to SEO taught a generation the basics and the link index is still one of the big ones. So why are so many people searching for a Moz alternative?
Usually it is not one big problem. It is a plan that felt fine until you tried to do a real month of keyword research on it, or a tracked keyword cap that ran out halfway through a client roster. Sometimes it is simply that the work has moved: more of it happens inside AI assistants, and more of the questions are about AI answers rather than ten blue links.
This article covers what Moz Pro does well, where people run into its limits, and six alternatives with a fair comparison table. Prices were checked on each vendor's own pricing page in October 2026.
What Moz Pro still does well
It is worth starting here, because "alternative" articles that pretend the incumbent is bad are useless.
- Link data and authority metrics. Moz says its Link Explorer covers over 40 trillion links, and Domain Authority is still the metric clients and link sellers quote. If your work revolves around link outreach, that matters.
- Learning resources. Moz's guides and Whiteboard Friday archive are among the best free SEO education there is.
- AI visibility features. Current Moz Pro plans include AI prompt tracking across GPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, plus AI Overviews data by keyword. Moz has not stood still.
- A predictable, polished interface. It is a mature product with fewer rough edges than many newer tools.
If those are the things you rely on, Moz may still be the right tool for you.
Why people look for a Moz alternative
These are the reasons that come up most often, with the actual numbers from Moz's pricing page (as of October 2026):
- Keyword research limits on the entry plan. Moz Pro Standard costs $99/month ($79/month billed yearly) and includes 150 keyword queries a month. That is roughly five keyword lookups a day. Medium ($179/month) raises it to 5,000.
- Tracked keywords and sites. Standard includes 3 tracked sites and 300 tracked keywords. Large, at $299/month, gives 25 sites and 3,000 keywords. Agencies with many small clients feel this quickly.
- Seats. Standard includes 1 user, and extra seats cost $49/month each.
- Workflow. Moz is built around its own interface. If you want to ask an AI assistant to pull data, compare competitors and draft a plan in one conversation, you need something that connects to the assistant.
There is also a $49/month entry plan for a single website, which Moz describes as designed for individuals managing one site.
Moz alternatives compared
| Tool | Starting price (Oct 2026) | Best at | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moz Pro | $49/month entry plan, Standard $99/month | Link metrics, DA, learning resources | 150 keyword queries/month on Standard |
| Semrush | SEO Toolkit Pro from about $139.95/month | Broadest feature set, PPC and content tools | Price climbs fast with toolkits and seats |
| Ahrefs | Starter $29/month, Lite $129/month | Backlink index, competitor research | Lite keeps only 6 months of history |
| SE Ranking | Core from about $129/month | Rank tracking, agency features | AI search tracking is a paid add-on |
| Mangools | Basic from about $49/month | Simple keyword research | Smaller toolset, weekly rank updates below Agency plan |
| SEO Sauna | €59/month excl. VAT, incl. €17 of usage credits | Essentials in one place, AI-assistant workflow | Smaller link index than Ahrefs or Moz |
A note on reading the table: "starting price" means the cheapest plan most people would actually buy, billed monthly. Annual billing is cheaper with most vendors.
1. Semrush: when you want everything
Semrush is the closest thing to a full marketing suite. Keyword research, competitor traffic, site audits, PPC research, content tools, local listings and AI visibility all live under one login. The SEO Toolkit Pro plan starts from about $139.95/month (as of October 2026), with Guru and Business tiers above it and bundled "Semrush One" plans that combine SEO and AI search tools.
Pick it if you run SEO and paid search together, or a team needs one tool for many jobs. Skip it if you mainly need keyword research and rank tracking: you will pay for a lot you do not use. We compare the two biggest suites in more detail in Semrush vs Ahrefs, and cover cheaper picks in Semrush alternatives.
2. Ahrefs: when backlinks are the job
Ahrefs runs one of the largest independent link indexes and its Site Explorer is the standard tool for "where does this competitor's traffic and authority come from". Lite costs $129/month and includes 750 tracked keywords and 6 months of history. Standard ($249/month) and Advanced ($449/month) extend history to 2 and 5 years. All three include API and MCP access. A $29/month Starter plan covers basic keyword and competitor lookups.
Pick it if link research is your core work, or you need deep historical data. Skip it if your budget is under $100 a month. More on that in Ahrefs alternatives.
3. SE Ranking: when rank tracking is the main event
SE Ranking started as a rank tracker and it shows. Core starts from about $129/month (as of October 2026) with 10 projects and 2,000 keywords tracked daily, and Growth adds more projects, seats and keywords. There is an Agency Pack for white-label reports and an "AI Search" add-on for AI Overviews and ChatGPT tracking, billed separately.
Pick it if you track many keywords for clients and want white-label reports. Skip it if you mostly do research rather than monitoring.
4. Mangools: when you want simple and cheap
Mangools (KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner, SiteProfiler) is friendly, fast and focused on keyword research. Paid plans start from about $49/month for Basic on monthly billing, with an Entry plan and a free plan below that. It now also offers an MCP server and an AI search monitor.
Pick it if you are a blogger or small business owner who mainly needs keyword ideas and difficulty. Skip it if you need serious backlink analysis or daily rank tracking: daily rank updates are on the Agency plan only.
5. SEO Sauna: when you want the essentials and an AI-assistant workflow
SEO Sauna is the tool we build, so read this section with that in mind. It covers the work most small teams actually do: keyword research, domain and competitor research, backlinks, rank tracking, site audits, Google Search Console and AI visibility, for one flat price.

How it differs from Moz:
- One plan, usage-based. €59/month excluding VAT includes 17,000 usage credits (€17) each month. Extra credits cost €1 per 1,000. There is no per-project cap and no feature locked behind a higher tier.
- Rank tracking you size yourself. You choose keywords, devices, depth and frequency, and see a cost estimate before it runs. As a rough guide, 100 keywords on one device, five pages deep, checked weekly, costs about €1–2 a month.
- AI assistant built in. SEO Sauna is an MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT (custom connection), Cursor, Codex and other MCP clients can call its tools directly. You can ask "which of my pages rank 5–20 with decent impressions, and what should I change?" and the assistant reads your data and answers. See Claude SEO for what that looks like.
- Your own Google data. Search Console reads use no credits.
- AI visibility included. Prompt tracking on ChatGPT and Gemini by default, with Google AI Overviews, Claude and Perplexity available. See the AI visibility guide.
- Open source. The code is MIT-licensed and self-hostable.

Where Moz is better: Moz has its own link index and Domain Authority, a longer history and more polished reports. SEO Sauna's data comes mainly from DataForSEO. If your clients judge links by DA, keep Moz or Ahrefs for link work.

You can start free with 1,000 trial credits (€1) and no card. The SEO Sauna 101 page gives the full overview.
6. Free option: Google Search Console plus a free tool tier
If budget is the main reason you are leaving Moz, do not overlook the free layer. Google Search Console shows your real clicks, impressions and positions for 16 months. Ahrefs Free gives Ahrefs data on your own site, and Moz itself has a free community account with limited MozBar, Keyword Explorer and Link Explorer access.
This will not replace a paid tool for competitor research, but for a single site it covers more than most people expect.
How to choose
Answer three questions:
- What do you do every week? Research (keywords, competitors) points to Semrush, Mangools or SEO Sauna. Monitoring (rankings for many clients) points to SE Ranking or SEO Sauna. Link analysis points to Ahrefs or staying on Moz.
- How many sites? If you manage 10+ small clients, check per-project and per-keyword limits before price. A cheap plan with 3 sites is expensive once you add a second plan.
- Where do you work? If you already do much of your thinking in Claude or ChatGPT, a tool that connects through MCP saves a lot of copying between tabs. Ahrefs, Mangools and SEO Sauna all offer MCP access today.
Then run a real week of work in a trial. A tool that looks cheaper on paper can cost more in workarounds.
FAQ
What is the best Moz alternative?
It depends on what you use Moz for. For an all-in-one suite, Semrush. For backlinks, Ahrefs. For rank tracking across many clients, SE Ranking. For simple keyword research, Mangools. For the essentials at a flat price with an AI-assistant workflow, SEO Sauna.
Is there a free Moz alternative?
Google Search Console is free and shows your own site's real search data. Ahrefs Free and Moz's free community account offer limited data too. For competitor research and rank tracking you will eventually need a paid tool, but SEO Sauna lets you start with 1,000 free trial credits and no card.
Is Moz Domain Authority still useful?
Yes, as a quick relative comparison of sites. It is Moz's own metric, not something Google uses. Other tools have their own versions, such as Ahrefs' Domain Rating, and the numbers are not interchangeable.
How much does Moz Pro cost in 2026?
As of October 2026, Moz Pro Standard is $99/month, Medium $179/month and Large $299/month, with about 20% off on yearly billing. There is also a $49/month entry plan for a single website. Check the Moz pricing page for current details.
Can I use an SEO tool with ChatGPT or Claude?
Yes, if the tool offers an MCP server. SEO Sauna's server is at https://app.seosauna.com/mcp and works with Claude, ChatGPT (custom connection), Cursor and Codex. Setup takes a few minutes: see Connect your AI assistant.
