Cheap SEO tools in 2026: what to use for each job
Cheap SEO tools that do the job in 2026: free Google tools first, then budget keyword, rank tracking and audit tools with real prices and their trade-offs.
The big SEO suites are excellent and priced for teams. Their main plans start well above €100 a month, and a small business, a freelancer or a side project often needs a fraction of what they offer. So you go looking for cheap SEO tools and find lists of 40 products, half of them free trials that turn into the same €100 bill.
This guide takes a different route. It sorts tools by the job they do, starts with the free tools from Google that most sites underuse, then covers budget paid tools with prices checked on the vendors' own pricing pages in October 2026. It also covers where cheap tools cut corners, so you know what you are giving up.
Prices below are monthly, in euros as shown to European visitors, excluding VAT unless noted. Vendors change prices often, so check the linked page before you buy.
Start free: Google's own tools
Before paying for anything, set these up. They are free, the data comes from Google itself, and for your own site they are more accurate than any third-party estimate.
Google Search Console
The most important free SEO tool there is. It shows the queries people searched before they saw your site, clicks, impressions, CTR and average position, plus indexing status and crawl problems. It keeps up to 16 months of data.
What it does not do: it says nothing about keywords you do not rank for yet, or about competitors. That is the gap paid tools fill.
Google Analytics 4
GA4 tells you what visitors do after they arrive: which pages lead to sign-ups, purchases or calls. Combined with Search Console, it answers "which organic pages make money", which matters more than raw traffic.
PageSpeed Insights
PageSpeed Insights tests a page's speed and Core Web Vitals, with real-user data where Google has enough of it and a lab test either way. Run it on your main templates (home, a product or service page, a blog post) rather than every URL.
Other free tools worth knowing
- Google Keyword Planner gives keyword ideas and volume ranges. It needs a Google Ads account and is built for advertisers, so treat its numbers as rough.
- Google Trends shows whether interest in a topic is growing, seasonal or fading.
- Bing Webmaster Tools is Bing's version of Search Console, with its own keyword and backlink reports.
- Ahrefs Free is a free tier listed on Ahrefs' pricing page; check there what it covers today.
- Semrush's free plan allows a demo project and a small number of reports per day (10 as of October 2026). See Semrush's prices.
A free stack of Search Console, GA4 and PageSpeed Insights covers how your own site performs. What it cannot tell you is what to do next: which keywords are worth targeting, who you compete with, who links to them and where you rank day to day.
Budget paid tools by job
Keyword research
Keyword tools are where free data runs out first. Keyword Planner shows ranges, not exact volumes, and gives no difficulty score.
- Mangools (KWFinder and related tools) starts from about €37.70/month on annual billing (€452.40 a year) or about €61/month billed monthly, as of October 2026. The Basic plan allows 100 keyword lookups per 24 hours and 200 tracked keywords updated weekly. See Mangools pricing.
- Ahrefs Starter is the entry plan of a major suite, from about €27/month as of October 2026. Check what it includes against your needs on the pricing page; the next plan up, Lite, is from about €119/month.
Rank tracking
Daily rank tracking for hundreds of keywords is where budget plans usually stop being cheap, because every keyword is checked on a schedule. Look at three things: how many keywords are included, how often they update (weekly or daily) and the price per extra keyword.
- SE Ranking starts from about €87.20/month on annual billing or €109/month billed monthly for its Core plan, which tracks 2,000 keywords daily across 10 projects, as of October 2026. See SE Ranking pricing.
- Mangools Basic includes 200 keywords with weekly updates; daily updates start on its Agency plan.
Our comparison of the best rank trackers goes deeper on this category.
Site audits
- Screaming Frog SEO Spider is free for up to 500 URLs per crawl, which covers many small sites. A paid licence costs €245 a year as of October 2026 (about €20 a month) and removes the limit. See Screaming Frog pricing. It runs on your own computer and assumes some technical knowledge.
Backlinks
Backlink data is the most expensive data to collect, because it means crawling much of the web. This is where the big suites are clearly better: Ahrefs and Semrush have the largest link indexes and the longest history. Budget tools offer smaller indexes or monthly caps, such as the 100k backlinks per month in Mangools Basic.
All-in-one suites
If you want one tool for everything, the entry plans of the established suites, as of October 2026:
| Tool | Entry price (monthly billing) | Annual billing | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semrush | from about €134/mo (SEO plan) | about €112.52/mo | Large databases, many reports; free plan available |
| Ahrefs | from about €27/mo (Starter); Lite from about €119/mo | up to 17% off | Strong backlink index; free tier available |
| SE Ranking | from about €109/mo (Core) | about €87.20/mo | 2,000 daily tracked keywords, 10 projects |
| Mangools | from about €61/mo (Basic) | about €37.70/mo | Simple tools, daily caps, weekly rank updates |
| SEO Sauna | €59/mo | n/a | Usage credits included; MCP for AI assistants |
Where cheap SEO tools cut corners
A low price is not a bad thing, but it is always paid for somewhere. Know which of these you are accepting.
- Daily caps. Many budget plans limit lookups per day. Fine for steady work, frustrating when you want to research a whole topic in one sitting.
- Smaller databases. Fewer keywords and backlinks in the index means more "no data" for niche terms and small markets. Check coverage for your country, especially outside the US.
- Slower updates. Weekly rank tracking instead of daily, or backlink data that is weeks old.
- Project and seat limits. Cheap plans often cap the number of sites or users. For a consultant with eight clients, the per-project limit is often what forces an upgrade.
- Missing features. AI visibility, local SEO and API access are often extras or reserved for higher tiers.
- Lifetime deals. A one-off price sounds cheap, but data costs money every month. Read what happens to limits and updates after the first year.
The other way to overspend is the opposite: paying for a suite and using 10% of it. If you open your SEO tool twice a month to check rankings and look up a few keywords, the cheapest plan with a monthly cap may still be the wrong shape for you.
SEO Sauna: flat price, pay for the data you use
SEO Sauna is our tool, so weigh this section accordingly. It is built for people who want the essentials in one place without a large monthly bill.

How the pricing works
The paid plan costs €59 a month excluding VAT (a 2026 offer, valid until further notice) and includes 17,000 usage credits, worth €17, every month. Credits are spent only when you fetch paid data: keyword metrics, competitor domains, backlinks, rank checks, site audits and AI visibility collection. Viewing projects, settings and data you have already fetched uses no credits, and neither does reading Search Console.
So you do not pay for a large fixed quota you never use. If you need more data in a busy month, top-ups cost €1 per 1,000 credits and do not expire. Monthly included credits reset each billing cycle. You can start free with 1,000 trial credits (€1) and no card.
What is included
- Keyword research with volume, difficulty, CPC, intent and trends.
- Domain research and backlinks for any domain, including competitors.
- Rank tracking where you choose keywords, devices, depth and frequency, with a cost estimate before it runs. As a rough guide, 100 keywords on one device, five pages deep, checked weekly costs about €1 to €2 a month.
- Site audits.
- Google Search Console integration, read-only, with no credits used.
- AI visibility: track whether ChatGPT and Gemini mention your brand, with Google AI Overviews, Claude and Perplexity as options.
- An MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT (custom connection), Cursor, Codex and other AI assistants can use the same data in a conversation. See Connect your AI assistant.
- Unlimited projects, with no per-project cap.

Most of the data comes from DataForSEO. SEO Sauna is also open source and can be self-hosted, in which case you pay data providers directly.
Where the big suites are better
Ahrefs and Semrush have bigger link databases, longer historical data, more specialised reports and years of mature features. If backlink research is your main job, or you need deep history for large sites, their higher price buys real things. SEO Sauna covers the everyday essentials at a flat price, adds AI visibility and an AI-assistant workflow, and leaves the rest to you. The SEO Sauna 101 page has the full overview, and if you are weighing the suites directly, see Semrush alternatives.
Three budget setups
| You are | Free base | Add |
|---|---|---|
| Small business, one site | Search Console, GA4, PageSpeed Insights | One low-cost tool for keywords and rank checks, or nothing until you publish regularly |
| Freelancer or consultant | The same, per client | A tool without per-project caps, so each client gets a project |
| In-house SEO on a large site | The same | A full suite for backlinks and history, plus Screaming Frog for crawls |
Whatever you choose, the tool is the smaller part. Clear positioning, pages that answer real questions and steady work matter more than which subscription you pay for.
FAQ
What is the best free SEO tool?
Google Search Console. It is free, comes from Google itself and shows the actual queries, clicks and positions for your site. Add GA4 for what visitors do after arriving and PageSpeed Insights for speed.
Can I do SEO with only free tools?
For your own site's performance, yes. Free tools fall short on keyword research with exact volumes, competitor analysis, backlinks and daily rank tracking. Many small sites start free and add one paid tool when they publish regularly.
What is the cheapest paid SEO tool worth using?
It depends on the job. For crawling, Screaming Frog's free version and €245-a-year licence are hard to beat. For keywords and rank tracking, compare daily caps and update frequency, not just the price. SEO Sauna's €59 plan includes €17 of usage credits each month and charges only for data you fetch.
Are cheap SEO tools accurate?
Keyword volumes and traffic estimates from any third-party tool, cheap or expensive, are estimates. Budget tools usually have smaller databases, so they show "no data" more often for niche or non-US keywords. For your own site, Search Console is the accurate source.
Do unused SEO Sauna credits cost anything?
No. The €59 plan includes 17,000 credits each month and you pay nothing extra if you do not use them. Included credits reset each billing cycle, while top-up credits do not expire.
